A new wave of Diablo 4 leaks has surfaced online following a private test, suggesting that a controversial feature from its predecessor is returning.
In-game screenshots, screenshots and other information about Diablo 4 have surfaced in recent days, giving fans their first look at the upcoming action RPG. The leaks came after Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier revealed in twitter (opens in new tab) that an early version of Diablo 4 Friends and Families has been released.
The leaks reveal several unconfirmed features of the RPG. Diablo 4 character creator shared on reddit (opens in new tab)next to Details (opens in new tab) of the game’s Smart Loot system and partial player switching.
How smart is very smart?
A Smart Loot system was first introduced in Diablo 3, causing quite a stir among fans of the series. Essentially a targeted drop system, it ensures that loot dropped by defeated enemies is appropriate for your character’s class and stats. If you’re playing a Mage, for example, you’re less likely to encounter a crossbow than a ranged-focused Demon Hunter.
But his appearance in Diablo 4 has divided players. Most reddit (opens in new tab), Some feel that the feature improves on Diablo’s formula, making your grinding faster and more rewarding. It’s particularly useful if you know you’re going to stick to a single class, as you’re likely to acquire a lot of gear suited to your character.
Those who are less enthusiastic say the system encourages less experimentation. Players can quickly build a strong character and may be less encouraged to replay another class. Fed with a constant supply of items that suit a single character, changing classes becomes hard work as you have no hidden gear to dive into.
some players (opens in new tab) suggest that the Smart Loot system should be reduced to introduce a greater element of chance. Others dislike it in its entirety, claiming it removes those unexpected moments when you find the perfect item by sheer luck or a powerful item that inspires you to totally change your character build.
To trade or not to trade
Restrictions on player switching were also hotly debated. According to the leaks, low rarity items can be traded between players in small quantities, but more valuable items cannot be distributed.
many in official diablo forum (opens in new tab) defended the decision. They hope this will avoid attracting unscrupulous players who will try to manipulate the market to their liking. Others (opens in new tab) noted that the importance of player trading will be closely linked to the Smart Loot system. If each player’s drops are selected to suit their character, players are less likely to find items they don’t want to keep for themselves. This partially negates the need to change equipment.
While the leaks stem from an early build of Diablo 4, which could change dramatically when the full game launches, there’s good reason to think these features will remain in place. Blizzard has maintained and defended the Smart Loot system since Diablo 3’s release in 2012, and Diablo 4’s limited trading system was even teased in 2019.
“The idea is that we have three different types of tradable items,” game designer Zaven Haroutunian said during Blizzcon 2019 panel (opens in new tab). “There is a class of items that can always be traded no matter what… and we also have a class of items that can be traded once.
“We’re also thinking that the most powerful and highest quality things in the game should be items you can’t trade. You have to earn them yourself. You have to go do those endgame dungeons and kill monsters to get that loot.”

Diablo 4’s character creator also appeared in this recent leak, with several screenshots and videos shared on reddit (opens in new tab). Offering our first glimpse into the cosmetic side of Diablo 4, they showcase a character customization system that feels a bit above previous Diablo games. You will be able to choose from a variety of body shapes, skin colors and tattoos.
An official public or private playtest of Diablo 4 has yet to be announced. If you’re super eager to get involved, however, you can always get a spot in their beta program by getting a permanent tattoo.
