There are vacuum cleaners and *vacuum cleaners*. Dyson’s new wireless model, the Dyson Gen5 Detect, lands firmly in the latter camp.
The first vacuum to feature Dyson’s state-of-the-art Hyperdymium engine – which spins at up to 135,000 rpm, around nine times faster than a modern Formula 1 engine – the Gen5 Detect is the brand’s smartest and most powerful sucker to date.
To go along with that shiny new motor, the vacuum has a fully sealed HEPA filtration system and a new ‘Fluffy Optic’ cleaning head that reportedly reveals twice as much microscopic dust – using an array of lights and sensors – as its predecessor, the Dyson. V15 Detect.
And the best part? Gen5 Detect is designed to capture 99.99% of particles down to 0.1 micron – that’s virus territory, folks. In other words, Dyson’s latest cleaning creation is a gamble for a spot at the top of our list of the best vacuum cleaners money can buy in 2022.
Dyson says its inventors built the new vacuum motor around a shorter shaft, combining several parts into one and wrapping it all in a single, precision-molded structure to ensure maximum energy efficiency.
This redesign certainty pays dividends on the resistance front. Gen5 Detect promises 70 minutes of continuous runtime, which is about 10 minutes longer than the already impressive equivalent figure presented by V15 Detect.
The Gen5 Detect also eliminates the trigger of its predecessor, opting for the same triggerless control that Dyson implemented in its V12 Detect vacuum.
As for the new vacuum cleaner head, it projects a blade of light – presumably similar to the spacecraft from Close Encounters – to illuminate invisible particles on the floor and in hard-to-reach areas of your home.
And finally, to make things even more sci-fi movie props, Gen5 Detect sports a new user interface (UI) that shows you – in real time – when your room is clean. To do this, Dyson says the vacuum is equipped with a sensor that uses acoustics to count and categorize the size of particles, activating bars on an LCD screen that rise and fall according to the volume of particles being removed.
No US or UK release date or price has been revealed for the Dyson Gen5 Detect yet – but rest assured, it must be incredibly expensive. The new vacuum is it’s already on sale (opens in new tab) in Australia for a whopping $AU 1,499 (equivalent to about $940 / £830), so we recommend you start saving your pennies now if you want to upgrade your current vacuum to Dyson’s latest cleaning kit.
